VIJSO – Vanda International Junior Science Olympiad

VIJSO Overview

The VANDA International Junior Science Olympiad (VIJSO) is an annual global competition for students in Grades 3 to 11 (Primary 3 to Secondary 4). It challenges participants to think critically and creatively by applying scientific knowledge and methodologies to solve novel problems.

  • Target Audience: Open to all students, with difficulty scaled across different age groups.
  • Syllabus: Generally based on the Singapore School Science Syllabus, focusing on higher-order thinking rather than pure memorization.
  • Competition Modes: Hosted both online (school-based or private) and offline/in-person through registered local centers and schools.
  • Scholarship Points: Participants can earn points based on their performance (Perfect Score, Gold, Silver, Bronze) which count toward regional educational benefits and future competitions.

Competition Structure:

Students tackle challenging questions designed to extract hidden information and test their analytical skills across core science disciplines. The competition tests fundamental understanding through multiple-choice and open-ended formats.

Global Participation:

Managed by the Singapore International Math Contests Centre (SIMCC), VIJSO attracts hundreds of thousands of contestants from over 50 countries. It serves to nurture future scientists and innovators by giving them a robust, internationally recognized metric of their STEM capabilities.
